How would you rate the games? Did you ever replay them and change your mind? Posted: 09 Oct 2020 05:41 PM PDT Title. I love Arkham a lot, even if I sometimes forget about it for years at a time. Since I'm quarantining because of a covid infection I decided to replay my favourite games about society dipping into chaos. Considering the sheer age of the games, I realized throughout my replays that my opinions had changed, and since I'm STILL in quarantine, I decided to write this post. 1) Arkham Knight. With all sincerity, I think this is the peak of the franchise. I loved it a lot when it released, but I think I love it even more now. I'm wholeheartedly in love with nearly every aspect of the game: Combat is at it's best, I found the Batmobile segments to be a nice change of pace, and the Predator encounters are extremely tightly designed. It helps that there's a lot less filler gadgets... though I rarely if ever used Line Launcher takedowns, it's nice they were there! As for the story, while I get people's gripes with it, I love it a lot. The Joker's implementation felt pretty natural and he didn't take away the spotlight (LOOKING AT YOU, ORIGINS!), and it's probably the only story I can think of where Scarecrow was convincingly threatening rather than arbitrarily threatening. The twist about the Knight was extremely obvious, but I loved the interactions surrounding it and I don't think I'd've changed anything except maybe adding a section near the end where you team up with him, like Dick and Tim got. My only major gripes with Knight aren't really with the main game (I've 240%'d it, after all), they're with the story DLCs. I get that they were kinda rushed, and I'm thankful they add more challenge characters, but aside from the little story clarifications they give they're kinda anticlimactic? I honestly think they could've been naturally added as post-story missions, but hey Warner Bro$ need their money. I'll stop myself. I could rant for hours about how wonderful I think the game is. 2) Arkham City. Wanna hear a funny fact? I hated this game when it came out. Don't really know why, honestly, but when I beat Asylum earlier in the month I was dreading playing City. Of course, I'm an adult now, so I think that explains things. Why? Because I fucking ADORED it on my replay. It's such a massive improvement over Asylum that it's almost a reach to think they were made by the same people. The story feels far more concise and gets to the point a lot faster, the encounters feel a lot more justified in their existence, the side missions aren't just "pray to god detective mode picks up amadeus' icon this time", and the expansions to combat and stealth make continuous play a BLAST. Really, the only reasons it's below Knight is because I just think Knight is better, and also because there are a few weak points. The entire Freeze vs. Batman section felt like an excuse to pad the plot out at the end, and honestly was kinda contrived. Also the ending to the Bane mission felt very silver age. 3) Arkham Asylum. Remember when I said that I hated City and then loved it as an adult? Kinda the inverse with Asylum. It was super influential on younger me, and I think I spent 4 years straight talking about it to my friends, much to their chagrin. Coming back to it 11 years later though, I'm realizing it has very serious Seinfeld syndrome; so many other games drew from it that I kinda struggle to play it because they improved on the formula. The foundation of Freeflow is there but it feels kinda limited. "Using all your options" in Asylum is a less engaging experience than every game that followed or ripped it off. It bleeds into the Predator sections too; stealth options are super limited and the map design doesn't lend itself well to proper tactics and setups outside some of the challenges (not all). The inability to lure enemies anywhere outside of attacking enemies with collars is also a HUGE negative, especially since City's knockout-smash function feels like a no-brainer. I still liked the game in spite of that during my replay... at least until you leave Botanical Gardens the first time. The pacing of the game starts to feel really off, and there's a LOT of backtracking, couple that with some unsatisfying fights (JOKER.) and it brings the game down. Overall? It's not bad, but even discounting better games it's not quite as good as I remembered. 4) Arkham Origins. I also played this on launch but bounced off towards the end. I remember it being a competent Arkham game with a few flaws. I was wrong. Bugs. So many bugs. Knight had a poor reputation for stability but my experience was fine aside from some Batmobile clipping. Origins, though? Bugs. The Batclaw whiffing even at point-blank range, attacks that should be invulnerable getting cut off by mooks, remote claw attacks passing through targets, glides randomly losing all speed, story events not triggering properly (Killer Croc stood there SIX TIMES, forcing a reset each time), detective mode scans not working right and more. This is all within the first two hours, btw. They evened out as I went on, but I think that was just me getting used to them. On a more surface level, the visual style of the game feels distinctly 2013. Asylum, City and Knight had solid aesthetic direction and a really good sense stylized realism going, so they aged pretty well IMO (EXCEPT THE NPC FACES IN ASYLUM). Origins? I don't think I could lie about when this game was released. It just looks 2013. I have more issues with the game. I can't put my finger on what they changed about the combat, but it felt decidedly off. The pacing didn't feel as fluid as any character in City/Knight/Asylum and the lock-on didn't feel as powerful, resulting in a lot of whiffs. The combat encounters THEMSELVES just felt really hollow and dull, and I often felt like they were there to pad out levels. The story was... okay? I think if it wasn't an Arkham game I'd be applauding it, but it's a little bit too "go A then B plot twist now more shuffling around" for my tastes, even by the standards of the series. I was actually kinda hype for some other Batman rogues to get a shot at the spotlight aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand they're dealt with anticlimactically except for Bane, oh and Joker takes the spotlight AGAIN. Once again, this'd be fine if it wasn't immediately after City. Also the voice acting... yeah I just wasn't feeling it. I played Resident Evil 5 last month, so Batman was very obviously "Roger Craig Smith doing that one Roger Craig Smith voice". The Predator sections are ultimately my biggest issue with the game. They feel sloppy. Even compared to Asylum's more primitive stealth design, Origins' stealth encounters feel like they were designed without stealth in mind. The first few offer barely any real tactics beyond "cover takedowns and retreating" and it doesn't really get much better. Grates and the like are present but they honestly felt kind of useless in Origins. Once again, I'll stop myself. Ultimately, I wanted to like Origins a lot. On paper it's a recipe for an amazing game, but the execution falls so flat that I finished the story out of devotion to the £6 I spent more than anything. Maybe in other lifetime, someone will tackle the concept with the grace it deserves. tl;dr This is a discussion post. Read it, or give your thoughts. [link] [comments] |
