Breaking down why the combat feels off in Origins. Posted: 01 Jul 2020 06:54 PM PDT This is just an analysis of things Origins' combat does differently than City, and I try to find some potential reasons for why it is the way it is. First of all, thugs in Origins are much faster than they were in City. In Normal mode in Origins thugs were going as fast as they were on Hard mode of City. This is especially noticeable if you play a challenge map in City then switch to a challenge map in Origins. Why did they do this? Probably because of how the Shock gloves make hitting thugs much easier, so they thought making enemies faster would balance out the difficulty. Next, in Origins the timing for counters is finicky. Why is this? Most likely because of the Critical Counter upgrade which will award you a critical strike depending on your counter timing, but by adding this they unintentionally messed up the timing so even though you press the proper button your combo will break. One weird change they made is that in City a Directed Arial Attack on a thug could be cancelled out by pressing counter if you were about to get hit. In Origins you either take the thug out on the ground or get hit. This might've been because they tried to make the game harder (they also did this by making more advanced enemies like Armored thugs, Shield thugs, and Stun Baton thugs show up much earlier in the story than they did in Arkham City). Another reason the combat is off could be that they wanted to present the feeling of Batman being more inexperienced at this point in his career. I remember reading that the devs originally wanted to show this by having him trip every so often and have batarangs miss sometimes, but they got rid of those features cause they were annoying. Maybe the combat was programmed to be off slightly to reflect his inexperience as well and they accidentally left it in? [link] [comments] | ||
