This suit could have looked so much better if the coloring wasn’t so dark. The first photo is the original and the second suit is the brightened suit, it is nothing from what I can do.

Miagani Island and Founders' Island completed. It was very tough, but now I only have to clean Stagg's airships and the main base of the Arkham Knight to beat the Riddler

Arkham Origins multiplayer design was amazing. Some of the best fun in all these games

    Posted: 22 Jul 2021 04:42 AM PDT

Arkham Origins had a lot of good stories and gameplay ideas in it, but people often overlook one of my favorite things about it - the fantastic multiplayer system it had.

    What it was like

Some people may not know what it was, so I'll briefly explain. Each match was about a battle between Joker's and Bane's armies for territory. Each side had three armed soldiers with an objective to capture zones on a map and prevent opponents from doing the same. Killing an enemy, capturing and keeping a zone secure generated points, the side with most points wins. Very simple and effective design that allows for more:

    1. Both sides have unique and powerful abilities including flying drones etc.

    2. If one side generates enough points, one of its players can switch a character and play as Joker or Bane with their own powerful weapons and abilities.

    3. The best part: two more players play as Batman and Robin (sometimes it was just Batman) and have to stop the shootout in regular predator map style. If Batman and Robin take down a lot of enemies and stay alive, their own score (terror meter) goes up and they can win a match too.

After a match you could get XP and spend it on customizing the characters.

Why it was a challenging experience

This multiplayer probably fits the description "easy to learn, hard to master". The objective is standard and each player knows what to do, so it is not frustrating or confusing, but winning is hard for every side, so it is not boring.

When playing as a soldier, you had to simultaneously go on offense against the enemy, defend captured zones, look out for enemies, traps and the dynamic duo. You had to think strategically about what you should do, as at any moment there were a lot of options on how to proceed. You could just run between zones, taking and retaking those, both solo and with teammates. You could traverse the map solo to get into the positions where it would be easier to shoot enemies and use special abilities. Do any of that wrong and a player could become an easy prey. Do it right, and a player could win the match and even roam the map for a while as Bane or Joker.

Speaking of those, playing as "bosses" was not that easy either. They did not have too much health and, say, Batman could remove them in two takedowns. Their abilities while powerful, required skill to use effectively. Putting them down was not much of a challenge for a good opposing team. A player had to think on how to utilize the advantage.

By far the hardest part was playing as Batman and especially Robin (less useful gadgets). Unlike the singleplayer, here you go against other humans who are alert and see you easily even when you are on vantage points. Flying around is a bad idea, you could get noticed very fast and every other player would go after you. Several shots is enough to take down both Batman and Robin as they have little health. Also, since everyone is running fast all over the map, it is hard to plan specific takedowns or go after specific opponents, so you have to find right balance between cautious strategizing to avoid being shot and taking a risk to get some score.

Why it was a good design

There are two main components that I liked about it: the gameplay and the atmosphere

The gameplay rewarded sheer skill. Strategic thinking, experience, knowledge of the map, creativity (especially as Batman and Robin), intuition were all appropriately rewarded. It was not just about who has best reflexes and precision with a gun, although that was also important, it was primarily about intelligence, just like a Batman game should be. A skillful player could turn the tide of any match for any side.

The atmosphere was unique for Arkham games. If singleplayer gave an idea of what it is like to roam from the perspective of Batman and other superheroes, the multiplayer for the first time gave an idea what it is like to roam from the perspective of soldiers and supervillains. The whole battle with the dynamic duo involved, for most players is a stressful, adrenaline-rushed, high-stakes encounter. If there is a skillful Batman player involved, other players may finally understand why villains fear him as they start panicking themselves as more and more varied takedowns follow. It was not just about the intelligence, but psychological warfare as well, again, just as it should be in a Batman game.

It had problems of course: disconnections, lags and small playerbase resulting from that.

It would be nice if Origins-styled multiplayer appeared back in Gotham Knights.

    Arkham Knight: Scarecrow's 'Prophecy'

    Posted: 21 Jul 2021 05:39 AM PDT

Spoiler alert for a 6-year-old game.

I'm replaying Arkham Knight, and I've just finished the first visit to the Stagg Airships, where Scarecrow steals the Cloudburst Device.

The game enters first-person mode, and a hallucinating Batman is made to pick between two Scarecrows; one is real, the other fake. Whichever one you pick, Scarecrow gasses Batman with fear toxin, then gives his usual speech. He wonders aloud about what the fear toxin is making Batman see:

"A city engulfed in fear? Betrayed by those closest to you? Your darkest secrets revealed?"

Before the end of the game, all three of these events come to pass:

    • Scarecrow activates the Cloudburst, blanketing all of Gotham in fear gas.
    • The Arkham Knight is revealed to be Jason Todd, the second Robin. Gordon also shoots Batman when Barbara is rescued (though one could argue that he knew a simple bullet wouldn't hurt Batman).
    • And of course, Scarecrow's ultimate victory has him revealing Batman's true identity to the entire world.

Unintentionally, Scarecrow predicted the major events of the rest of the game.
