Played the Arkham main games (Asylum / City / Knight) for the first time. Here my feelings

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 02:58 AM PST

This summer I felt in a superhero mood and picked the Return to Arkham collection (Asylum/City). Then I got blessed has Arkham Knight was a free game on the PSplus in September. So I went, for the first time, through the main Arkham serie and freshly finished Knight yesterday so I wanted to post my opinion/feelings about it :)

    Arkham Asylum :

    Played till Platinum

My first Arkham game and it was a blast. Being Batman for the first time felt so good.

    • Brilliant overall aesthetic of the game : the grimmy Asylum and the "comic" menu were just awesome
    • Story is more than decent and feel like a true Batman story (The Joker is awesome)
    • Enjoyed the Riddler's riddle and trophies
    • The best combat in the serie for me : happily surprised when I realized that it was not a button masher. Of course the moveset is limited when compared to the sequels but I felt like everything is useful. And most important it's the most unforgiving combat in the serie ; one mistake in input or timing and you lose your combo. In City and Knight it became much more forgiving.
    • Really the "small game feeling"

    Arkham City :

All sidemissions done but the 2 last riddler's hostage (around 330/440 trophies done). Catwoman and Robin DLCs done.

At first I was a bit overwhelmed by the scale of the game in comparison to Asylum (lots of new moves, the size of the map, activities...). But after few hours I got into it and enjoyed it.

    • Overall aesthetic is below Asylum in my opinion.
    • Story is interesting but disappointing at the end : the famous "Protocol 10" teased all along the game is pretty disappointing. Also the quick death of Ras'a and Strange just to put the Joker as final antagonist was a bit off for me.
    • Sidemissions are for the most part pretty strong.
    • Liked how the Catwoman DLC was integrated into the main story. Story was weak but playing as her was good.
    • Robin DLC is good.
    • The combat is building on Asylum legacy. The new moves/gadget are welcome. But as mentioned above, a bit more forgiving than Asylum.
    • Gliding freely in the City is really cool.
    • EDIT : Boss fight : Overall I'd say the boss fights in the series are weak, but City have some of the best for me (Freeze for sure and Ras was interesting)

    Arkham Knight :

Main story freshly finished yesterday. Most of the sidemissions done (3 firefighters to find, Riddler trophies to do and Azrael quest to do which I surprisingly only find the first one despite exploring/gliding a lot through Gotham). Season of Infamy done.

I'll do the DLCs after 100% the main game.

Similar to City, I was overwhelmed by the size of the game (map, skill tree, moves...). Took a bit of time to go in. Also was a bit burn out of the serie after 2 games in a row and the batmobile didn't help (but I'll get to that after).Still I really enjoyed it and find some motivation in the middle of the playthrough.

    • Pretty nice graphic and interesting aesthetic (but not the really cold menu)
    • Story and atmosphere : (Heavy SPOILERS ! Don't click on the spoilers if you haven't play Knight !) the BEST of the serie by a huge margin. The opening sequence, the scarecrow, Barbara committing suicide in front of us... quite some dark and mature things I liked and Batman becoming the Joker was the best part. Each Joker's intervention was so perfect. It was so scary to see Bruce fighting him through the whole game in his head. Also the ending as really strong sequences. I got pretty emotional on some scenes like when you have to mash attack to kill the Joker, took me some time to do it actually. The sequences where the Joker take us over and you kill all the super villains, and then in the crypt when Bruce take the control again are just amazing. Also I didn't want to do the Riddler trophies for the "true ending" but after seeing the ending of the main story I am full of motivation !
    • Combat is fine but way too much moves to unlock which most are useless. It's cool to have some diversity but this is too much.
    • Sidemission are varied and for some interesting. But the grindy one (Watchtower, mines, milicia checkpoint) are way too long.
    • Game is artificially made longer by the way too big skilltree which justify the way too long sidemissions (which give upgrade point) mentioned above
    • The Batmobile... First I have to say that I am not a fan of cars and driving (IRL and in games) so I was a bit scared by the so divisive Batmobile. Then I got it and I had to pursue a car and... it was an hot mess. It was barely controllable and I hated it. Then I had to jump on a roof to reach the generator of the Panessa Studio... and it was an hot mess AGAIN ! It took me I don't know how many tries then I succeed ! To fall few seconds later due to huge inerty this car seems to have. I thought quitting the game (helped by the burnout feeling of playing the 3 games in a row). But then I took it easy and was like "What is Batman without his batmobile ?". Then it was fine, I even had some fun driving around in Gotham because the batmobile is a full part of Batman for me. Despite the fact finding it out of place in a Batman game, I enjoyed the Tank mode and battles. But fully understand why people says there is too much and also the overuse of the Batmobile.

So to conclude I'll just say I enjoyed playing the Arkham games a lot. And I'll still play Knight for the true ending and DLC.

I'll wait for Origins because it'll be too much otherwise. But I am sure once they announced the new game and some gameplay I'll be hype and play Origins in the wait :)

I can't really rank the games because I like them for different reasons so I'll put it like this :

    • Best combat : Arkham Asylum
    • Best Story and atmosphere : Arkham Knight
    • Arkham City is a good in between but probably the one I'll rank slightly below the 2 others

Guys, I had some free time and I've updated the Arkham wiki page with all the awards won by the games. I know that awards don't really matter but I think that it's cool to see that even game critics appreciated these games. Hope you like the idea.

What's your honest opinion on WB Montreal potentially, continuing the Arkham story past Arkham Knight?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 08:59 PM PST

So according to rumors, WB Montreal's Arkham game might be a sequel to Arkham Knight. Which means the Arkham series will be continuing beyond the ending point Rocksteady gave it.

What's your honest thoughts on this? Do you feel that WB Montreal should've went a different direction? Are you ok with the story continuing past it's end point? Do you think they should've left the Arkham series at rest with AK's ending?

What's your thoughts? Are you worried, scared, excited to see what they might do with the story?

If the rumors are true about a bat family game I need the option in AR to play duel combat and predator mission with each combination having their own challenges this would be so much fun imagine batwoman and Nightwing or red hood and robin or Azeral and Catwoman this would have so much replay value

And I don't not mean co-op that would suck 😂😂

Can’t get my line launcher to work! (Batman: Arkham Knight on PS4)

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 03:13 PM PST

I'm trying to get this riddler trophy, it's grid 1, 3rd row and 4th trophy, I keep launching myself up with the batmobile and I land on the wall but I can't use my line launcher. Not sure what to do. :/

I'm looking for opinions on this game. I have never played it. And would like to know what people who have played it think about it. Whether it is worth playing ? Is the story good ?

    Arkham Origins PS now

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 06:27 PM PST

I have Arkham Origins on PS3 and intend on playing it again soon. I have seen it on PS now, I don't subscribe. As I understand it, it is just the main game with no add ons. Cold cold heart or being able to play as Bruce Wayne and some of the other challenges in the Batcave. Is it worth it ? I imagine the game is not remastered like what was done for Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. There would only be the graphics improvements from playing it on a PS4.
