Does anybody else like most of the Origins character appearances better?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 01:45 AM PST

I know for me, most of the overall design of Origins feels cooler and more comic and show accurate. Bane actually looks like Bane usually looks with the mask, and I believe there is such a thing as being TOO big, and Batman has more cooler-looking and functional armor instead of just the spandex look. Gordon looks more how I know him with brown hair instead of Gray. Black Mask also has an actual mask instead of being part of his face, and Deadshot looks cooler to me with the more full-face covering military look.

Anyone else ever thought that the arkham city detective mode colors are just not that good as Asylum , Asylum's enemies with guns have this alerting red color while city has a orange color that doesn't sit right .

    Batman: Gotham Knights (2021)

    Posted: 06 Feb 2021 01:57 AM PST

So, there is Tim Drake as Robin in Batman Gotham Knights, not Damian. Actually, who is Tim Drake? Next Batman? Also that could be Nightwing. Anyway, will you guys be satisfied about this game, without the Batman? It will be a nice experience to fans.

I just finished my annual playthrough of Arkham Origins (spoilers, obviously)

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 10:47 AM PST

My two Christmas traditions are watching Die Hard and playing Arkham Origins. I am fond of Origins because I started the Arkham series with Arkham City, and I wanted to know what Gotham outside the walls looked like. Origins answered that questions. Arkham Origins has many merits. The music is top notch and reinforces my Christmas vibe, and the plot is pretty good. This year I realized how good the foley soundwork is. All of the small noises are perfect, and really add to the experience.
However, Arkham Origins is widely regarded as being a flawed game, and one of the primary flaws is the Dark Knight System (DKS). The linear nature of the system is inherently dumb, especially when there are certain achievements that can only be done in a few locations, and some might be only accomplished in single locations. This year, however, I chose to regard the deeply flawed challenge system as a challenge itself. This year I was going to complete the Dark Knight System.
To accomplish this, my style of gameplay was one that:
    1. Completely ignored the plot. The point of this playthrough was to complete the Dark Knight System.
    2. Did nothing to advance the plot until there was simply nothing else that could be accomplished due to lack of gadgets or somesuch.
So with that mindset, I started the game. As soon as I got into Gotham, I found every Anarky symbol, and found every one Cyrus Pinkney's Plaques. I also destroyed every network relay and recovered every data pack that I could with the gadgets that I had. I also completed the Gotham Protector ladder of the DKS right away, as that doesn't require gadgets, is grindy anyway, and builds experience points and thus upgrades. Again, I did absolutely nothing to advance the plot so long as there was some other activity like data packs to recover. I also occasionally just found groups of enemies to beat up to not only build experience, but to actually work on my fighting ability. Arkham Origins is said to have a really crappy combat system. I discovered that while that may be true, I actually just really sucked at fighting. My previous style of combat relied heavily on spamming the strike button with the occasional counter, which, unsuprisingly, did not result in high combos or experience points. This playthrough, I actually took the time to learn to fight using combos, counters, gadgets, combat multipliers, and the like. I spent a lot of time in the challenge maps with the intent of improving my ability, and while that time was well spent, I thought it was dumb that you had to go to the Batcave to work challenge maps. I like having a bit of a warm up, particularly if I hadn't played in a while, and being able to get to the challenge maps from the main menu is nice. And ultimately, yes, the combat system is pretty janky and sometimes Batman would just start flailing at empty air only to get clocked in the head with a bat or pipe, but for the most part, I actually got pretty good at combat. I also discovered not only a good source of experience points, but also a minor sub plot by returning to the Batcave for challenge maps. Talking to Alfred was worth XP but also played out a pretty funny ongoing issue in the Batcave.
Once I got the glue grenade upgrade, I had to spend a LOT of time going back to all the data packs and other items that required the glue grenade to access. No plot progress was made for several gaming sessions, but I finished the Worlds Greatest Detective ladder of the DKS, and those XPs allowed a lot of upgrades.
I decided to make as much use of on line guides as I could. As my goal was to complete the DKS in a single playthrough, I needed to be aware of bottlenecks, and certain exploits to make a single playthough happen. Specifically, I used the Sheldon Park/Pioneers Bridge exploit (trick a guy in Sheldon Park into following Batman to the little corner that counts as Pioneer Bridge) to complete Level 15 of Gotham Protector. I knew to not upgrade the glue grenade with the proximity movement sensor as that makes Worst Nightmare Level 6 (Perform four exotic takedowns in one Predator Encounter) impossible.
I also found specific locations that were ideal for certain achievements. The poor gangsters in front of Sionis Steel Mill took a lot of abuse, as did the cops in front of the Royal Gotham Hotel and the goons in front of the cathedral. The cops on the roof of GCPD got worked over repeatedly. My point is that I spent a lot of time flying around Gotham looking for set ups that would lend themselves to achievements. By the time I left the Final Offer, I had completed Gotham Protector, was waiting at Level 12 (Natural 20) on the Shadow Vigilante ladder, and Level 5 (Complete a predator encounter without being seen and without using detective vision) of Worst Nightmare. I used the Merchant's Bank (Joker) to complete Level 6 of Worst Nightmare, Merchant's Bank (Deadshot) to complete Level 9 and 10, and the hotel lobby to complete Worst Nightmare Level 12 (Complete a predator encounter while using 5 different forms of takedown). Things were going great, and I was seriously kicking ass.
    Then I screwed up.
I got so fixated on completing Worst Nightmare that I forgot about not advancing the plot. I had an EXCELLENT video guide on completing Worst Nightmare Level 14 (Knock out three enemies with a propane tank) in the room with Firefly's first bomb, followed by Level 15 (Pull two enemies over different ledges at the same time) in the very next room. So after destroying Bane's computer, I hustled to Pioneer Bridge. I was totally going to complete the Worst Nightmare ladder, which would then allow me to concentrate on the Shadow Vigilante track. I didn't realize that once the player completes the Firefly mission and Bane attacked the Batcave, there was no way to leave Blackgate to go back to Gotham. I had to finish the game with the Shadow Vigilante ladder not completed.
However, once I was done in Blackgate, the game returned me to the top of Pioneer Bridge and allowed me to keep playing. I had expected to need a New Game Plus to finish, but not so! I quickly spawned the Shiva mission which unlocked the critical hit upgrade. I once again started working my favorite spots in Gotham, particularly in front of the Royal Gotham Hotel. That is where I got the Level 12 (Natural 20) by disrupting the guns then chaining critical hit combos. I came back to the hotel for Level 13 (Reach x30 combo and perform 7 combo variations in a single fight) using the same technique. Level 14 (Take out three enemies with the use of one Multi-Ground takedown) is almost trivial by this point in the game. I used an exploit for level 15 in which, during a single gaming session, you can break the 3 requirements (Complete a fight with a medium or higher threat level without being hit, with a x50 combo and at least 15 variations) into separate encounters. I got the 50x combo in front of Gotham Hotel, the 15 variations in a street brawl in front of Solomon Wayne Courthouse, and then returned to a side street around the corner from the Gotham Hotel to complete an encouter without getting hit. I finished the last encounter, and I was rewarded with a lot of screen notices, including the completion of the Dark Knight Challenges.
So, for Christmas this year, I completed the Dark Knight System! It can definitely be done in a single playthrough if you are careful and plan correctly.

If you could’ve added to or changed things within the side missions or DLC’s what would it be?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 07:12 PM PST

SPOILERS for those who haven't played/finished the main story or DLC's in the game.

I recently started replaying AK and it really got me thinking about the things that I felt could've been built on or done differently in Arkham Knight.

My hope is that you guys can let your imaginations run sort of wild and have some fun here, all while discussing the likes and dislikes of mine or each other's suggestions. AK gets a lot right, but I also felt that in some ways, the game got a similar treatment to how a lot of people discuss the Game of Thrones ending. The team just seemed ready to be done, and things they could've taken to the next level, put more effort in to, or built up in AC didn't have the payoff I was looking for (Looking at you Hush mission).

So here I am, putting YOU...in the devs chair. Your vision is happening, this is all fantasy so miss me with budgetary restrictions. If you could've had your ideal storyline present in AK, what would it have been? Me personally, I'm not going to discuss what they could've done differently within the main game. That's a much more challenging rabbit hole to go down when I consider, massive things like what I would've made Arkham Knight's true identity. But that doesn't mean you have to abide by that and certainly don't feel discouraged from posting if your change is within the confines of the main game. For that reason, I'm going to try to stick more to the DLC's since it doesn't require such a vast amount of content to dissect. First up...

Batgirl: A Matter of Family- This is just the model DLC imo. It would've been damn near perfect if Batgirl's animations could've been more unique. Think what you want about the narrative, while I found it enjoyable enough personally, this DLC earns it's praise from me on principal. The main thing this DLC missed was a skill tree. DLC for playable side characters should have, an isolated, unique environment. And a multi-mission, linear story structure that follows their own story. That's the best. If Batgirl has more moves in her arsenal and her own skill tree, this DLC is the cream of the crop.

Nightwing: GCPD Lockdown- an underwhelming DLC that went for comic relief. It was intended to but a bow on Nightwing and Penguin's mission line from the main game, and while this worked, I would have gone a different direction. One thing Arkham Knight missed on was 1v1 boss fights with villains who specialize in hand to hand combat. It could've taken notes from Arkham Origins in this way. I would've had Deathstroke escape the GCPD. He would have the resources and skill to do so. Given that Batman has dominated Deathstroke in the Arkham series, seeing he and Batman's star pupil face off would've been awesome. Not only could you have choreographed one (if not multiple) epic fight, you could redeem Deathstroke by having him dominate. You could've seen another side of Nightwing where, there's a physically dominate foe, and Batman isn't there. He has to handle this himself and rise to the occasion. He has to find a way to overcome Slade and take the next step in becoming his own hero. It could include references to the Judas Contract storyline or suggest that, Deathstroke and Dick have crossed paths before.

Robin: A Flip of a Coin- I remember this dlc dropping with a red, Robin-themed Batmobile skin. I was hype because, I had theorized that Robin was going to get his own Robin-mobile from Lucius in that expansion. We'd ride it around one of the 3 islands of Gotham and have interactions with commissioner Gordon and Lucius about how it's up to him to keep Gotham safe with Batman...gone. If anyone should've gotten a DLC on the level that Batgirl did, it should've been Robin. Robin who you know wanted to prove to Batman he could help more. I would've like to see more of a deep dive on Robin's psyche without Batman. The pressure, wondering if Bruce thought he was worthy of Robin, capable of protecting Gotham without Batman. An interaction between Jason and Tim would've been nice here. A pseudo-Under the Red Hood story but it's Tim chasing Jason around in stead of Bruce. When the come face to face, they fight and Jason wins...but tells him, he's worth it. He can do this without Bruce.

Red Hood & Harley Quinn: Arkham Episodes- I don't know that I would've changed much about these honestly. They were advertised as prequel and post-game snippets and that's exactly what they were. Getting to play with Harley and give her a moveset was a nice touch, and her prequel story that has her team up with Ivy to bust out of Bludhaven PD and team up on Nightwing was fun enough for what it was. Jason Todd needed something else after end of AK, just to show where his character went. Becoming the Red Hood, killing criminals and ultimately Black Mask paid and homage to their rivalry, and it was a nice cherry ending for Arkham's version of Red Hood.

Catwoman: Catwoman's Revenge- the thing about this is, it feels like regression from AC. Catwoman's AC missions complimented the over-arching narrative so well. Whereas her mission line in AK was relegated to a side mission associated with the Riddler. Well okay, it's fine that you want to cap that with her stealing all of Riddler's money in the end, making him pay, literally, for doing that. But this could've been drawn out in a way where, she has free-roaming capabilities, as she had in AC, and we have to do some interrogating to find where it was main hideout is. They could've copy and pasted it straight from AC, and they didn't. Additionally, I think you make this the last "Bat family" DLC. The ending could've showed Selina, in something other than her Catwoman gear, showing up at a remote location and saying something like, "well I knew you knew how to make an entrance...but that exit was one in a lifetime!" And we the silhouette of a man we can all imply is Bruce, and that he and her are together somewhere.

Azrael: Azrael really should've been a skin for Batman. He had no original moves. He looked cool, but that was it. Would I have been opposed to and "Arkham episode" DLC similar to Red Hood's that showed him using his Batman-esque abilities to take down the Order of St. Dumas? No I wouldn't have opposed that, but because his moveset was a copy and paste of Batman's, I don't consider it a missed opportunity.

And the last thing I would've added, would be a tease at what's to come in the form of DLC. Now, maybe Rocksteady didn't have that set in stone when AK released or even in the so many months thereafter, but recently I...started playing the master piece that is, The Witcher 3, for the first time. I found out, Witcher 3 came out in 2015, the same year as Arkham Knight. Witcher 3 won game of the year that year. As I've been playing through it, I can't help but think how well...a Deathstroke game in the same style as The Witcher 3 would work.

Deathstroke's skill set translates very well gameplay wise, from the games Rocksteady has made. They also, shorted him in the Arkham games imo. So, you take notes from the game that beat your big title out for GOTY and apply it to a popular character from your own license. Imagine a Deathstroke game where you travel across 3-4 major cities, completing contracts, making money, upgrading your armor, swords and guns. Taking your contract earnings and Investing in your penthouses and vehicles. Completing major events, and minor ones throughout that have an impact on the cities. Give the player options for the type of Deathstroke they want to be, either more noble or more brutal. You already had your M-rating from the ESRB with AK. I think they could've taken Deathstroke in that direction, gave him more shine than he ever got in the Arkham series, and provide a new system that is different from what they've always worked on, but rings with familiarity.

I know this post was long, so if you actually read it, thank you. I love the Arkham series, and it's easy to talk about what could've been...but I really put some thought in to what I would've liked to see creatively. I'd love to read the things you guys have in this regard! Thanks again for reading this all the way through if you did!
