A Batman's "noob" view of Batman: Arkham Asylum

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:46 AM PST

Hey Guys, the other day I mentioned that I picked up the Batman Collection with no previous experience in watching, playing or reading anything to do with the Arkham universe.

I loved Arkham Asylum so much I just want to give my own thoughts, perhaps providing a different directional insight or maybe I will just come across as a noob again as I interpret situations in a completely wrong way.

    VILLIAN'S + STORY

    - This is the one I want to talk about the most. The main story, as you play is simple but what interested me so much more was of course the Villain' s and the character bios and interview recordings. What I loved about Arkham Asylum is that is was a fantastic environment to get introduced to all the villains and a small back story for them.

Having seen the Joker movie (my only real Arkham Universe watch) I do like to think that's how he originated. I felt like the Joker new he was playing a game, he knew that every person he put in Batman's way, that Batman would overcome it. Sometimes when you come out of little vents and divert your route into different buildings the Jokers graffiti is there as if he has indirectly paved a path for you to his 'party.' He is always upbeat despite you making a lot of progress. He knows the party is coming down to him vs Batman and for his own ego, he wanted to see everybody beaten before he had his chance. However Joker knows that Batman will defeat him in hand to hand combat and that's why titan was so special to him (he masked this by trying to convey that it was for an 'army'. I still don't understand Jokers obsession with Batman, something I hope to uncover in other games. The Jokers insane, but he's very methodological and is always one step ahead in his approach.

My only criticism of Harley Quinn is her tapes. I do believe she was 100% converted before she came on her intern. She was fascinated by criminals and it's an ode to Jokers character that he has the ability to brainwash someone and pick out the vulnerable. I do really enjoy the tapes, but I feel like the writing is poor. The brainwashing is obvious from the Joker, and an intern should be on top of that but again, I think it represents that Dr. Harleen was already converted before she went, and the only way she could 'join' that world was through sanity to get to insanity. Also I thought they could've done her boss battle better, you end up just fighting inmates.

Scarecrow is my favourite villain in this game, and it's a shame about what happened to him. His character is just so fascinating and his missions are so unique compared to the rest of the gameplay. The developers did this character spot on, he's meant to be scary and he is. I definitely want to do some more research on this character.

Bane's appearance is brief but is core to story due to his Titan canisters. The main thing I picked up was that he was serving his fathers sentence?? That's weird, I therefore feel sympathy for him (just like for killer croc.) I hope I learn more about him with the other games.

The Riddler is a fascinating character. His logic on why Batman was a criminal was a valid one, for someone who doesn't know he's Bruce Wayne. I loved his puzzles, I tried to do them more. His tape was chilling about the baby, something I think he hinted because it was a victim of his. Also was his Dad right because he knows he's a 'moron' or he 'cheated?' He's such a fascinating character, I feel he could've been cured, I don't see him as completely insane. I don't think he intends to kill Batman, he just wants to expose him (exposing him could've result in fatality from a riddle however.) He reminds me of the Zodiac.

Victor Zasz is a chilling character, a pure psychopath, the only one he 'needs' to kill and the marks he does and his tapes are chilling. I don't have much more to say about him, my bad.

Killer Croc is someone who have sympathy for, an obvious outcast, he had no other way. I don't know how he became a cannibal. Probably a clear hatred for humanity but also a mix that he was outcast so much he didn't even see himself as a human anymore. He finds solace in portraying a different species.

Poison Ivy is my least favourite villain despite the Botanical Gardens being gorgeous. I don't really understand her as a character. Her seduction techniques are unique but not very interesting and her tapes just amplifies her seduction techniques. I want to learn more about her, she mentions after Batman she will come for Joker, she truly only cares about her plants.

    GAMEPLAY + BOSS FIGHTS

gameplay is smooth asf, and satisfying. Simple but difficult to master. I was so bad lol, but I got there. The boss fights were a tad repetitive, just avoiding and chucking your barang at titan filled bosses. The best was definitely trying to delve into the story and doing all of the riddles, I loved learning about all the Villains and how the Asylum was actually such a floored concept. The guards are inept, the science is there, but there was no hint or indication at a success. Every Interview tape started with hopelessness. The asylum continued to fuel hatred and insanity into these villains, it was an island, that's a hint for physical isolation, not only mental isolation. I read up on a character who came after getting into a bar fight and then adopted Scarface, an example of this. It was a place that amplified insanity. It also seems like Gotham is a very f**** up city, all the character bios I read had some parents death involved there and there about.

Anyway I could take about it all day hahah, hope you guys enjoyed.

The "What's up danger?" scene from Spider-Verse came to my mind, and it inspired me to make a shot based on it.

Picked up Arkham Knight on PS4 earlier this year and took my time with it. I decided to finish the game completely this time before finally activating Knightfall. Boy did it feel earned.

Finally played an Arkham game -- significantly better than Spider Man PS4

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 03:33 PM PST

Okay, well, not totally true -- I played maybe an hour of Origins a long while back at a friend's house, but didn't really like it and never picked the series up again.

I finally got City during the steam sale, and am enthralled with the gameplay. After playing SMPS4, I can say absolutely that it's basically just a clone of this series. They did okay, but this game definitely hold the torch.

Not that Spider man is a bad game, just very obviously took heavy inspiration. Also shit story, I absolutely hated the story, worst part of the game for me. Weak twists, weak villains, weak acting all around
